Old Stagers Present ‘The Visit’

7.30pm Tuesday 29th July – Saturday 2nd August 2025 (2.45pm matinee Wednesday 30th July 2025)

Gullen is a dump. This once prosperous town is crushed by poverty. But the one hope of salvation is extraordinary billionaire philanthropist Claire Zachanassian who lived in the town until she was 17. Will she turn up for her first visit in 40 years? If she does, will she help them? And if she will, are there to be any strings attached?

The Old Stagers – the world’s oldest dramatic society – are excited to bring you Durrenmatt’s classic piece of German-language theatre. The National Theatre presented an adaptation in 2020, but we’ve gone back to this lively earlier English version first used by Peter Brook for his celebrated New York production. The theme of the dangerous power of great wealth – and what it does to our collective morality – is a timeless one, but perhaps has a particular resonance at the current time. Plus there’s a (twisted) love story – and plenty of dark comedy!

The Old Stagers have been performing in Canterbury every summer since 1842, stopping only for two world wars and one pandemic. Join us this summer for our 172nd season!

By long-standing tradition on Friday and Saturday night the show will be followed by The Epilogue, a short light-hearted revue performed by the cast and friends.

Event Type: Theatre
Running Time: 150 minutes
Company: Old Stagers
