Your Visit
Theatre Opening Hours
The theatre box office and bar will open an hour before show time for ticket collection, sales and refreshments.
ParkingÂ
The Malthouse has very limited onsite parking available, parking in any available spaces will be allocated on a first arrival basis and cannot be pre-booked. Our car park opens one hour pre-show. We offer one electronic car charging station and a limited number of disabled parking bays.Â
We recommend you use local car parks such as St Radigund’s (5–7 minute walk), Pound Lane (10 minute walk) Canterbury West (10-12 minute walk) or public transport.
Latecomers will be turned away and advised to park at one of these city centre pay & display car parks. The Kings school sports centre is monitored by Parking Eye who will issue penalty charges if you use this car park unauthorised.
Buses to the Malthouse Theatre
The number 4, 21 and 27 bus all stop outside Malthouse Road on St Stephen’s Road.
Taking the train
Canterbury West Station is 0.4 miles from the theatre and takes just 9 minutes to walk. Canterbury East Station is 1 mile away and Taxis are available from outside the train station.
AccessibilityÂ

Drinking & Smoking
We can only allow alcoholic drinks bought in the theatre bars to be consumed on our premises. You are welcome to take your drinks into the auditorium, but we ask that you decant into plastic disposable and compostable cups beforehand.Â
We do not allow glass to be taken outside the Malthouse or into the auditorium. We may undertake bag checks to enforce this and will confiscate any alcoholic drinks that are brought in.
Smoking or vaping is not permitted inside our premises at any time. There is a designated signposted area and cigarette bins outside which can be used during a performance. Â
Food & DrinkÂ
The Malthouse has a great, small, licenced bar which offers hot & cold drinks, snacks and ice-cream. Interval drinks can be pre-ordered before the show starts.Â
We are close to Sainsbury’s and only a short walk into town to a great variety of bars and restaurants.

Keeping you safe
We’ve put a few measures in place to make your visit to the Malthouse as safe as possible.
For the safety and security of all attendees, the theatre reserves the right to conduct random bag checks at any time. By entering the Malthouse site, visitors consent to such searches and agree to cooperate with security personnel. Refusal to comply may result in denial of entry or removal from the performance. These measures are in place to ensure a safe environment for everyone, and we appreciate your understanding and cooperation in advance.Â
The Malthouse operates 24hr CCTV. Images are recorded and monitored for your safety and to help prevent crime. Please contact 01227 595610 for information about the scheme, which is controlled by The King’s School Canterbury.Â
Mask wearing is no longer mandatory, but we support an individual’s choice to wear a mask throughout the building.
The theatre has a fresh air flow system which pumps fresh air from outside into the auditorium – this can mean if the outside air temperature is low the theatre can feel cool.
The Malthouse is a welcoming and inclusive space for all. We do not tolerate abusive behaviour toward our staff, audiences or visiting artists.Â
Safeguarding
At the Malthouse Theatre (part of King’s School Canterbury), the safety and well-being of all children and young people on site are our top priorities. We are committed to creating a secure, supportive, and inclusive environment where every participant can thrive and express their talents. If you have any concerns about the safety or well-being of a child participating in activity at the Malthouse Theatre, please do not hesitate to contact Mr Luke Illsley, our Designated Safeguarding Lead (DSL) at lji@kings-school.co.uk.
Carer Ticket Policy – Malthouse Theatre
Who is this for?
What is a carer?
Bringing a carer to the theatre
If you need a carer to accompany you, please let us know when booking your tickets. This helps us make sure the right arrangements are in place for you both. Carers can change from visit to visit, but we ask that they stay with you throughout your time at the theatre.
If you need more than one carer, please tell us at booking so we can confirm your requirements and check availability.
Do carers have to pay?
Good news! For accessible bookings, one carer can attend free of charge with every paying ticket. We just ask that your carer remains in a supportive role throughout the visit and does not use the ticket for their own independent enjoyment of the show.
If your carer wishes to attend more than one show independently or take part in any paid activities beyond their caring role, they will need to purchase a ticket.
We’re excited to welcome you and your carer to Malthouse Theatre and look forward to making your visit a great experience!
